Good will is coming to Haiti these days from all walks of life. Different industries are doing their part to help out the devastation of Haiti. Calvin Eyre, the founder of Bodog, has called out those within his own industry, online gambling, to help with the relief effort.

Ayre posted on his blog that he has ordered his foundation to send GBP 10,000 to UK based Oxfam. He did not stop there, however, with Ayre going on to ask for help from others within the industry. Ayre claimed his foundation will match any donations from persons within the online gambling industry up to $1,000,000.

“It is a disaster in Haiti. I know they have had a tough go from Mother Nature recently, hurricanes and now this earthquake. I cannot help but be disgusted with the ruling elite that has driven this country down like this while, no doubt, filling their own pockets,” said Ayre in his message on his blog.

After filling in his guests on the background of the situation in Haiti, Ayre then went on to call out other members of his industry.

“That all said, the innocents as always are paying a horrendous price for this elite thievery, and I think the global online gaming community has a duty to do something,” he said. Ayre believes that the online gambling industry will respond and help the victims of the Haiti tragedy.

Bodog is one of the most recognizable names in the global Internet gambling industry. The company was launched back in 1994, and has become one of the world’s largest providers of sports and casino gambling.

With online gambling becoming increasingly popular around the world, many countries have moved towards regulating the industry. This has allowed some of the biggest companies in the industry to become wealthy, which is why Ayre has decided that the industry as a whole should help out the Haiti relief efforts.

Caesars Cup Becoming

Caesars Cup Becoming An International Poker Phenomenon

The game of poker has been searching for ways to make itself more appealing as a worldwide sport. The NFL, NBA, MLB, and professional soccer are all recognized as major international sports, but the game of poker does not command the same respect in the competition world.

The Caesars Cup, along with a new professional poker league, is starting to change all of that. The Caesars Cup is expected to do for poker what the Ryder Cup and Davis Cup have done for golf and tennis, respectively. The Caesars Cup puts the top American players against a team of top European poker players and has them battle it out on the felt.

In 2009, the US was heavily favored in the event, bringing some of the most recognizable names in the game to the Cup competition. Instead of staking their claim to the notion that the US has the best poker players, the team flopped, falling to a team of Europeans that cam mainly from the online poker generation.

Phil Hellmuth was involved back in 2009, and he has been chosen as the captain of the US squad for the rematch, starting on October 19th. Bertrand Grospellier, a well-known pro, is the captain for the European team. Despite the fact that it is a competition, the Americans have a clear goal in mind when they arrive next month.

“Team American has a score to settle after what most considered a colossal upset in London,” World Series of Poker Executive Director Ty Stewart told ESPN. “You see a real rivalry developing as European players continue to win more tournaments around the world.”

The US players had long been considered the best in the world, but recent events at the Caesars Cup of 2009, and the WSOP, have balanced the playing field, or at least created the perception that the field had been leveled. The European players had a strong WSOP this year, and several are still in the running to win the main event when it resumes in November.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the selection of the 2011 Caesars Cup team is whether or not Phil Ivey will be involved. Hellmuth mentioned Ivey as a possible teammate, but the player many consider to be the best in the world, has been boycotting the game since Full Tilt Poker was indicted in the US.

Ivey has taken exception to the idea that the site still has not paid customers back the funds that were in their accounts at the time of the indictment. The poker pro filed a lawsuit against Full Tilt, and has maintained that he will not represent the company to which he is contractually obligated at any poker events. Hellmuth did, however, already name one player to his squad, the legendary Doyle Brunson.

Caesars Casino Goes Online: But No US Players, Yet

Free slot tournaments, fast payouts, and great player response make this site #3 in our Top 10.

The US online gambling market is considered the biggest in the world, so it is no wonder that Harrah’s Entertainment launched its new online casino, Caesars Casino Online, recently. The ironic part, however, is that the casino is not taking US customers yet.

Harrah’s has been making preparations for law changes in the US and has led the way for other land based casino operators to follow. To date, the others have not followed, holding strong to their stance of being anti-online gambling regulation. Steve Wynn has been the most outspoken opponent of these regulations.

While Caesars becomes the first land-based operation to move online, Harrah’s has not chosen one of the top software developers to power the casino. With the likes of player favorites like Microgaming, Cryptologic and Playtech available, Harrah’s has gone with the player hated software company, Dragonfish, which also powers 888.com. The online casino will be run on the affiliate-end by Uffiliates.

US lawmakers have begun to discuss overturning the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Representative Barney Frank has proposed legislation that not only would overturn the UIGEA, but also would lay the foundation for a regulated online gambling industry in the US.

The US has come under fire from the European Commission regarding their Internet gambling laws. The current laws are a violation of European Union trade agreements, and the US, along with several other countries, have been warned to come into compliance.

France, Spain, and Italy have all made strides this past year towards upholding their EU agreements. The US just started the process last Tuesday when Frank held discussions with other lawmakers in regards to the issue.

The ancient Rome themed casino carries all the traditional table games that would be found in any of Harrah’s land based casinos, but because of their choice in software developers, the casino lacks many of the popular slot games that can be found at their casinos around the world.

Betfair Left Out In The Cold By New France Online Gambling Law

Betfair has made the decision to allow punters to bet, and that decision will now cost the company any chance it had to enter the French online gambling market legally. The French Parliament has added an amendment to their online gambling laws that will essentially keep Betfair out.

Betting exchanges that allow punters to place bets were excluded from the legislation that will regulate and legalize online gambling in France. Betfair does not believe that the new amendment is legal, and may challenge the amendment.

France is concerned with the growing number of betting scandals and match fixing that has been taking place in recent years in Europe. They have brought in the heads of several sports leagues that are in support of keeping corruption out of their games.

A British Gambling Commission report from 2007 was cited as one of the reasons for the amendment. The report claimed that 9.9% of punters that used betting exchanges such as Betfair, developed gambling addictions. That figure is considerably higher than the percentage of the general public that developed addictions.

The European Union is one of the main reasons that France is changing their online gambling laws at all, and there is concern that they may not take the news of the new amendment lightly. The European Commission earlier this year was approached about the law and had no ill-feelings towards the amendment, opening the door for the French Parliament to follow through with the amendment..

Championship Tournament

Aldridge Leads At WPT Legends Of Poker Championship Tournament

The East Coast of the US is being pelted with rain and wind associated with Hurricane Irene, but the inclement weather is not spreading all across the country. In California, some of the top poker players in the world have gathered for the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker tournament.

The event is being held at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California. The weather has been beautiful for much of the weekend while the top players in the game battle it out in the $3,500 buy-in event. Over 750 players ponied up the money to enter the tournament, and on day two, only 120 of those players remain.

For much of the weekend it has been legend JC Tran that has controlled the action on the tables. Tran had a commanding chip lead in day one, but has since fallen back a biut in day two. Currently, Chan still sits in tenth position in the chip count, with 330,000. The players Chan and the rest of the field is chasing is Ken Aldridge.

At 565,000 chips, Aldridge is well above the average chip stack left in the tournament. Matt Berkey has also had a nice run on day two, and sits in second position with 490,000 chips. Chance Kornuth is the only other player in the field with over 400,000 in chips. The blinds have risen to 1,200-2,400 with a 400 ante.

Those that are above the 189,500 average chip count include Gavin Smith, Greg Mueller, and Brett Hanks. The youngsters are again showing that they can play with the legends, as evidenced by Hanks’ position in the tournament thus far. Play will continue into the evening before breaking.

Several women were among the casualties on day two, including Kristy Gazes Marsha Wolak, and Maria Ho. Mike Sowers, Nicolas Levi, Nick Rampone, and Larry Ormson were among the latest players eliminated. The winner of the tournament will take home $758,085, with the second place finisher winning $365,600. Play is expected to slow down soon as the field approaches the bubble. The top eighty-one players will make it into the money.
